Bar code label selection should be done according the application in which they will be used. A few things to consider are size, material, length of use, and adhesion requirement.
Size
Measurement are indicated by width by height.
2″ x 1″ is a typical size for asset tags. 4″ x 6″ is a typical size for box labels.
Paper or Synthetic
A shipping label is usually paper and most inside applications usually can work with paper. Synthetic labels should be chosen if the label is expected to last for an extended period of time or if the label will be subjected to difficult conditions.
Long or Short Term Labels
Labels can generally be classified into two broad categories – Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer. In Direct Thermal printing, the printer heats a label to create the bar code or other print image. This label will typically darken with heat or prolonged exposure to sunlight. Direct Thermal printing is recommended for relatively short term use.
Thermal Transfer printing uses a ribbon which is burned onto the label. There are different ribbons for different sizes and materials of labels. Thermal Transfer printing is recommended for long-term use.
Adhesion
Normal adhesion is typically all that is needed for most applications. Custom solutions are available for special needs. The cost is significant in small quantities.
Do not risk choosing a label that is not right for your situation. Seek a professional in the barcode industry for the type of materials to use for your application for the best results.
